‘ Vivir o No Vivir,’ esa es la Interrogante /   ‘ To Live or Not to Live,’ that is the Question

By Dr. Hector Ortiz

In William Shakespeare’s classic play Hamlet, the main character utters the famous phrase, “To be or not to be, that is the question.”

Many years later, I would like to rephrase that statement by saying, “To live or not to live, that is the question.”

It can be compared with another substantial question: Are you living or do you simply exist? The answer to this question is only yours to answer, and we should ask ourselves this question on a periodic basis to assure that we are truly living instead of merely existing.

Success and failure or sadness and happiness are just two temporary instances of life. The most important thing is to recognize that they are just the byproduct of our actions. Life gives us the opportunity to plan for what we would like to accomplish and, at the same time, to have fun.

Success comes easier to those who explore choices and opportunities without fear. It is natural to be anxious or nervous when taking new risks, but you are not being fair to yourself if you quit or become negative at the start of a new dream, goal or commitment.

If we are living, it is normal to aspire toward gaining material things as well as bringing positive emotional approaches to our lives. The fact is to ensure that you don’t let yourself be driven by fate, but rather by choices. When you exercise the power of choice, you avoid the trap of focusing on faults, defects or weaknesses.

Success and happiness is a decision of the mind. If you decide to see the dark, the negative, the bad and just the pessimistic view of things, it is your decision. The consequence is that, consciously or unconsciously, you may be just existing instead of living. On the other hand, you can choose to see the light, the positive, the goodness and the optimistic side of all things.

Success and happiness as well as failure and sadness are most likely a decision of the mind, and at the same time, the way to handle it is always in our hands and in our minds. For that reason, always make your choice and enjoy the privilege of living one more day, one more week, and one more year.

Life is beauty! Enjoy, take the maximum of it and remember “To live or not to live, that is the question.”
