Why Did I Join Rotary?

By Bob Saline, Rotary District 7390 Communications Chair

Rotary is a business and professional worldwide network of committed individuals who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace all around the world.

The question is why did I join Rotary?

I first joined because I knew from discussions in the business community that Rotary International was a great way to network within that community. After all, a number of my clients at my public relations firm were members. They talked so favorably about their involvement. Any business person who wants to grow their business or succeed at their career should consider joining Rotary.

A more comprehensive question is: why have I stayed in Rotary for more than 15 years and made the effort to become active on the board and as a president?

Here the answer is so much more than just the value of networking. During those 15 years, I’ve been able to make the efforts and monies of a small business person much more powerful through the “service above self” commitment of every Rotary member. I often refer to this as the power of Rotary.

While I may invest an hour or more in a local project, there are 10, 20, 30 or 100 fellow Rotarians at that same project. Maybe we’re remodeling a house, having a pancake breakfast to raise monies for our eye clinic or working at the Eye Expo (the clinic) to help elementary students better see the learning world around them.

Through the Rotary International Foundation (RIF), my contributions become magnified by the more than 1.2 million Rotarians around the globe. There, my dollars provide clean water, education and aid in eradication of polio.

I joined Rotary for one reason and found so many more ways to lead and serve. If you would like to experience the power of “service above self,” come to one of our 45 Rotary clubs in Central Pennsylvania and join us.
